Dtlyyyy’s on the Unpredictable Path of Creativity
‘It gave me a sense of control over how the narrative is perceived and felt. As I started experimenting with editing tools, I found the process to be incredibly fulfilling.‘
– How do you get the idea for a project?
Ideas come in a variety of ways, I’d like to put it as me being open to the things around me. An idea could come from anywhere, a movie, a song, a conversation I’m overhearing, sometimes I don’t even have to think about it , it comes naturally, I can even get multiple ideas at once, other times I have to actually look and pay attention for the ideas.
– Does the finished product appear in your mind or the steps to creating it first?
It’s both ways, on some projects I build from scratch with no picture of the finished product in my mind, while others I already know the direction and how I want the project to look and feel, but sometimes the final product will have some differences to the original idea I had in mind.
– What would you call your art style and why would you classify it as such?
I actually haven’t thought about this, I just try whatever idea I have and think about the best medium to bring that idea to life.
– What themes do you feel drawn to the most?
Joy, freedom, I want my work to radiate that.
– What thought process goes into creating a moving poster?
First I get all the assists I’ll need to make it, I spend a few hours or a day looking at them and just getting ideas on where and how to put them in the big picture, then I start to build, I make each part separately and then later put them on the timeline, switch their positions around to get the best flow.
– Have you experimented with other art styles?
I have, I can draw , not at a great level, but it’s alright, I have also tried 3d modeling, photography, I just do anything basically.
– Album covers, what’s been your favourite to create to date and why?
Hard to pick, but I’ll go with Willy Jackson’s Medicine cover art. The process was funny, beachside I was supposed to go to his place to take the picture for the cover art the idea was to get flying pills in the shot, but I couldn’t make it that day, so he got his sister to take the pictures, while I directed on a video call.
– You have a lot of music related content, why is that so?
I think music is the arguably the most powerful and common means of expression, and not just sonically, visually too, and I love when the visuals compliment the music, and having the skills to bring those visuals to life , I’m just naturally drawn to it, and I have a lot of artiste friends .
– How did you come up with the idea of your first collage and what was it about?
My first collage was terrible, it was of my friend Michael, a couple of uncompleted ones, but I got better after the like fourth attempt.
– A multi faceted man, how did you get into making music videos?
I’m just 12 year old me’s dreams, I listened to a lot of music growing up, music videos too, sound city , music Africa , prime time Africa, I always felt draw to it, and now I just live my dream, bigger things to come.
-Last but not least, if you were a vegetable, which one would you be and why?
Carrot? rabbits are cute and rabbits love carrots, tomatoes? so I can be in stew. I really don’t know
