Charlie J: The Art of Nightly Verses and Cosmic Dreams
‘Having stories and emotions that are not only relatable to yourself but others is an important part about art as it allows us all to connect together’
-Writing a verse every night—what’s your secret sauce for late-night creativity?
Honestly it’s just about creating a creative routine. Nightly verses are more of a creative exercise to me rather than about creating the best possible art – if I am able to write a 16 bar verse at the end of the day no matter how tired or busy I have been, it just makes it all the more easier for me to write for songs during the day when I do feel creative!
These verses almost act a little bit like a journaling exercise too as I may reflect on my day through them – I think learning how to tap into different aspects of your life to inspire art is a great thing to do.
“We Get Low” is a powerful piece. How do you channel such deep emotions into your chill
hip-hop vibe?
WE GET LOW was actually written during a pretty bad week of my life – I had fallen out with one of my friends, I had a few plans that were cancelled last minute and also had a few unexpected bills. I had just decided to work on a small track, originally for Instagram reels, when creating WE GET LOW but I just managed the channel the emotion of the week – with the premise that we all have low periods in our lives but this is juxtaposed with the highs we get as well.
I believe storytelling is an important part of my music – all my favourite hip hop acts are great at doing that. Having stories and emotions that are not only relatable to yourself but others is an important part about art as it allows us all to connect together.
South Wales loves you! What’s a fan moment that made you go “Wow, this is why I do what
I do”?
Thank you! There have been a lot of cool fan moments over the years, but my favourite that I can think of right now has to be when I had a younger artist send me a track that was inspired by my work! He had recently seen me perform and it inspired him to create something and I think that’s beautiful!
Headlining shows must be electric. How do you turn that energy up to eleven?
Usually this involves me bringing out my live band! There have been a couple of instances where I have done support slots with my band but usually budgets mean I can only afford to bring them at a headline show! Having all that live instrumentation really helps bring a new energy to my live performances and I wish I could have my band come along with me more often!
Any quirky routines or rituals that keep your creative engine running every day?
I meditate first thing every morning for 15 minutes. I believe it helps me to have a clear mind when going into the day. I’ve managed to keep this up now for the majority of the past few years – I had an over 1000 day streak on my app but sadly when I was flying over to Australia last the change in time zones and being in transit for over 24 hours I accidentally missed a day so lost my streak.

–What’s cooking next? Any sneak peeks into your upcoming projects or themes?
I have an array of singles that are all collabs coming on the horizon, I’ve always felt that collabs are a great way to tap into larger audiences! I will say there will be multiple longer projects coming in 2025 – all of my favourite artists have dropped multiple extended projects when they were on the come up, whether that be EPs, Mixtapes or albums. From Pac and DMX in the 90s, to 50 cent in the mid 00s, even Kendrick Lamar dropped 5 projects in 3 years between 2009 and 2012 along with countless features and I feel if that formula has worked so well for so long why shouldn’t it also work now?
-Last but not least, if you could be stranded on any planet, which would it be and why?
I was a bit of a space nerd back in the day so I’m not sure if we’d include exoplanets in this question or not, but there was an Earth sized planet in the goldilocks zone orbiting around the star Gliese 581 discovered about 10 years ago (named Gliese 581g) – I believe it’s existence is now debated but if it does exist, I imagine that of all the planets we know of I’d probably have a decent chance of actually being able to survive there! Otherwise I’d just say Mars because lower gravity could mean I could jump higher and it wouldn’t take too long to send messages to my family and girlfriend back home!
