Is it because my body is partly water
that I crave a lake, one of the oceans,
any river or creek?

Did my ancestor really crawl out,
out of water and onto land, learn to walk, stand,
did I once belong to water?

I love the desert, too,
admire redwoods, dogwoods, pines.
Did I once live with the trees?

And the stars, the magnificent stars!
How they call to me, message me
through my personal less-than-century.

Perhaps I arrived here on a comet,
landed in an ocean, crawled out,
lived with the jungle, walked across
a desert, and ended up here,
where I crave a lake and love trees
all these generations later.
Perhaps.
